Motor vehicle accidents cause about half of all traumatic brain injuries. During an automobile accident, the force of the impact can cause the brain to collide against the hard skull. When a moving head comes to a complete stop, the brain continues to move and strikes the interior of the skull. A brain bleed (hemorrhage) is not always apparent at the time of the injury. Blunt head trauma occurs when a moving head hits a stationary object. A roof crush can cause an open head wound which is a blunt trauma. There is increasing evidence that traumatic brain injuries do occur from head injuries even though there has been no loss of consciousness.

Type of Head Injuries:

Head injuries are typically defined as opened or closed. They are defined as follows:

Open Head Injury: This injury occurs when an object fractures and goes into the skull. In a motor vehicle accident, this can occur when someone goes through the windshield.

Closed Head Injury: This injury occurs when an object strikes the head but doesn't break the skull. This can occur from someone hitting the steering wheel.

A concussion is the most common form of traumatic brain injury. A concussion is a closed head injury that occurs when the brain is shaken back and forth inside the skull as the result of an impact.

Treatment for a Traumatic Brain Injury:

One of the main concerns regarding traumatic brain injuries is insuring that there is proper oxygen supply to the brain and the body and controlling blood pressure. If the TBI is mild to moderate, the patient will probably receive head and neck X-Rays to check for bone fractures. For moderate to severe cases of TBI, CT (computerized tomography) scans are often performed. Rehabilitation for victims of moderate to severe TBI's includes a combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological treatment as well as speech and language therapy.
