Drunk Driving Still A Major Problem in Florida

In Florida, in 2014 there were 685 fatal accidents involving drunk drivers. These accidents accounted for 27.5% of all fatal Florida traffic accidents. Even though Florida has some very strict laws regarding drinking and driving, many people still blatantly disregard these laws. Victims of Florida DUI accidents can face serious injuries or death. Injuries can include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and more.

Penalties for a Florida DUI:

The penalties for a first DUI offense in Florida could send a driver to jail for up to six months and could cost up to $1,000. If the offender has no prior criminal history, they may receive a fine of $500, probation and a license suspension or jail time up to six months. A first time DUI offender may also be ordered to attend drug and alcohol treatment programs and be sentenced to community service.

The penalties for second and third DUI offenses are much more serious and fines can go as high as $4,000. Penalties can also include a mandatory 10 days in jail and possibly up to 12 months of jail time. Four or more DUI convictions is considered a third-degree felony.

Aggravated DUI:

A DUI is considered "aggravated" if the BAC (blood alcohol content) is greater than .15. Also, having a child in the vehicle while driving under the influence can lead to an aggravated DUI charge. In extreme cases, child neglect charges can be filed.
