New technology could cause motor vehicle accidents

For Floridians and people around the U.S., technological advancement is generally seen in a positive light. If a new vehicle has more features, it can enhance its value and utility. Still, there are advancements that are relatively new and are impacting people who are not accustomed to them.

For instance, as a new AAA study shows, in-vehicle technology is causing drivers, especially older drivers, to be distracted. Distracted driving is such a prominent problem that it caused more than 3,000 fatalities in 2017. The goal of the technology inside the vehicle is to prevent people from using their smartphones, but these attempts at safety are forcing people to remove their eyes from the road.

The level of distraction such drivers face can be worse for them than for younger people. Those between the ages of 21 and 36 took eight fewer seconds to complete various tasks using this technology than those 55 to 75.

With this study, there were 128 drivers driving six different vehicles with these in-vehicle navigation systems. As they performed their tasks like making calls, using navigation, changing the radio and texting, it took older people from 4.6 to 8.6 seconds more to finish. They were slower to respond to the system and were visually distracted.

AAA says that the fault is in the design and not fundamentally linked to age. Still, older people might have reduced reaction time and looking away from the road can cause cognitive and visual confusion.

Despite the benefit of being connected to work, with friends and loved ones, there are risks involved with in-car technology. As with all motor vehicle accidents, it is important for there to be a full investigation with all relevant evidence accrued. A law firm that understands how distracted driving contributes to motor vehicle accidents can help with the case.
