Motorcyclists face a long recovery after a crash

Motorcycle wrecks are serious matters because the injuries are often life-threatening. The person on the motorcycle doesn't have anything to protect them from being injured except for their helmet and some clothing. People who are in other vehicles have the frame and body to offer some protection. Plus, they have seat belts to help them remain safe.

Injuries depend on the severity of the motorcycle accident. Minor accidents may cause broken bones and lacerations. More serious accidents might be fatal or result in head or spinal cord injuries. Even if the rider survives the crash, there may be some lifelong issues they have to deal with.

Causes of motorcycle crashes

There are many factors that can contribute to these crashes. For the most part, motorcyclists are safe drivers. Riding at night can be problematic due to reduced visibility. The motorcyclist might not be able to see everything going on around them, and other vehicles may not be able to see the motorcyclist.

The small profile of the two-wheel vehicle may also pose problems that can lead to wrecks. It might be difficult for other drivers to see the biker, but this isn't a valid excuse. All drivers must do their part to help keep everyone on the road safe. Around 70 percent of motorcycle accidents occur at intersections. This area is problematic since there are often obstacles that drivers can't see around.

Other causes of motorcycle accidents include drivers who are impaired by drugs or alcohol, distracted drivers, high speeds and carelessness. All of these are preventable.

Recovering from a wreck

The recovery process for motorcyclists who survive a crash is often lengthy. They usually need to go to the hospital straight from the scene. Many are admitted due to the severity of their injuries. Often, they will require therapies and intensive treatments to recover. They will have to remain off work for a while so they can focus on their healing.

Serious injuries, such as those to the brain or spinal cord, might make it impossible for the person to return to their former careers. This means they have massive bills at a time when their income is reduced. Victims can often seek compensation from the driver who struck them (or other at-fault parties).
