Drunk Driving Still A Major Problem in Florida

In Florida in 2014 there were 685 fatal accidents involving drunk drivers. These accidents accounted for 27.5% of all fatal Florida traffic accidents. Even though Florida has some very strict laws regarding drinking and driving, many people still blatantly disregard these laws. Victims of Florida DUI accidents can face serious injuries or death. Injuries can include traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and more.

Penalties for a Florida DUI:

The penalties for a first DUI offense in Florida could send a driver to jail for up to six months and could cost up to $1,000. If the offender has no prior criminal history, they may receive a fine of $500, probation and a license suspension or jail time up to six months. A first time DUI offender may also be ordered to attend drug and alcohol treatment programs and be sentenced to community service.

The penalties for second and third DUI offenses are much more serious and fines can go as high as $4,000. Penalties can also include a mandatory 10 days in jail and possibly up to 12 months of jail time. Four or more DUI convictions is considered a third degree felony.

Aggravated DUI:

A DUI is considered "aggravated" if the BAC (blood alcohol content) is greater than .15. Also, having a child in the vehicle while driving under the influence can lead to an aggravated DUI charge. In extreme cases, child neglect charges can be filed.

Facts About Florida DUI's:

All drunk driving accidents are preventable. Unfortunately, there are still far too many. Following are some facts regarding Florida DUI's:

The majority of DUI accidents occur on Fridays and Saturdays with most fatalities occurring between 3:00 and 5:00 am.

Someone is injured in a Florida DUI every 90 seconds.

21 to 25 year olds have the highest rates of DUI accidents.

The legal B.A.C. (blood alcohol content) in Florida is 0.08%.

About 28 people die every day in the United States in DUI accidents.

Florida's DUI accident rate is higher than the national average.

Men are more likely to be fatally injured in a Florida DUI accident than women.

Underage drinking and binge drinking contribute to a high number of Florida DUI accidents.

The number of bicyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists killed in Florida DUI accidents is increasing.

More Florida DUI accidents occur around the holidays than at any other time of the year.

How Insurance Companies Deal With DUI's:

If you have been convicted of a DUI, your insurance rates may increase substantially. Some insurance companies may cancel your policy altogether. If you keep your insurance with a higher premium, you may be labeled a "high risk driver."
