Neck Injuries from a Sarasota or Bradenton Motor Vehicle Accident

A neck injury after a motor vehicle accident is not always immediately apparent. Damage or injury to your neck can be felt in different parts of the body. Symptoms of a neck injury can include:

  • Headaches
  • Pain in the hands, arms or shoulders
  • Muscle spasms in the neck
  • Numbness or weakness in the arms or hands

Following are descriptions of neck injuries that are common after motor vehicle accidents:

Neck Sprain: When the ligaments in the neck are torn or stretched, a neck sprain can result. Ligaments are bands of tissues that connect bones together.

Neck Strain: When the muscles in the neck are stretched or torn, a neck strain can result. Neck strains and/or sprains can also be referred to as "whiplash."

Cervical Radiculopathy: Also called a "pinched nerve", this occurs when a nerve is irritated or "pinched" usually from a herniated disc or bone spur which causes the nerve to not function properly. There can be a pain in the area where the nerve travels.

Herniated Disc: When too much pressure is placed on a disc, the annulus can be torn and the nucleus pulposus can squeeze out of the center of the disc. This causes pain, weakness, and numbness.

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury. Most soft tissue injuries cannot be seen on X-rays. These injuries affect the muscles, discs, tendons, and ligaments. Other tests such as MRI's or CT scans can be utilized to help determine the extent of the injuries. Treatment can include physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, and medication.

Symptoms of Whiplash:

The early signs of whiplash take from two hours to two days to show up. Approximately 50% of whiplash victims suffer severe headaches, constant pain or intermittent throbbing pain. Other common symptoms are neck and shoulder pain. Muscle tears can cause prickling pain, tingling or burning. Sharp pain can be felt in the arms, hands or fingers if there is severe disc damage. Other symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Lower back pain and stiffness
  • Irritability
  • Facial Pain
  • Vertigo
  • Jaw Pain
  • Ringing in the Ears
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Nausea
  • Blurred Vision
